The Hongkong and Shanghai Hotels, Limited (HSH), the owner and operator of The Peninsula Hotels, will transition towards a ban on plastic straws in its operations around the world by November 1, 2018.

Plastic straws will be replaced with paper straws that meet sustainable paper considerations, and will only be served upon request where possible. This is a first step in the company’s global approach to transition away from single use plastics, including water bottles, packaging and bathroom amenities by 2020, through reduction, replacement with sustainable alternatives and increased recycling.

The HSH Sustainable Luxury Vision 2020 puts sustainability at the center of the company’s business model and brand. With seven areas of focus covering all divisions of the business, Vision 2020 sets out more than 50 economic, social and environmental goals that HSH is committed to achieve by 2020. The company’s seven areas of focus are governance and management, guests experience, employees, operation, new build and refit, supply chain and community.

Sustainability initiatives at HSH include the removal of endangered species from its food and beverage offerings, purchasing goods from certified ethical sources, reducing waste and carbon emissions, and meeting international green building standards, among others.

HSH is engaged in the ownership, development, and management of hotels and commercial and residential properties in Asia, the United States and Europe, as well as the provision of tourism and leisure, club management and other services. The Peninsula Hotels portfolio comprises The Peninsula Hong Kong, The Peninsula Shanghai, The Peninsula Beijing, The Peninsula Tokyo, The Peninsula New York, The Peninsula Chicago, The Peninsula Beverly Hills, The Peninsula Paris, The Peninsula Bangkok, and The Peninsula Manila.  Projects under development include The Peninsula London, The Peninsula Yangon and The Peninsula Istanbul.
