Space enthusiasts are itching to go to Mars to witness its reddish, desolate surface in person. That dream is, unfortunately, still lightyears away. However, adventurous spirits can take in the sky from the brand-new Kachi Lodge.

The lodge, located on the Uyuni Salt Flats of Bolivia at the foot of Tunupa Volcano, features white pods that look like a space station. Bonus: It offers a telescope to observe the starry night skies. It is set to open spring 2019.

Designed by Amazing Escapes, the domes provide hotel room-type amenities, such as comfy bedding with thick duvets and private bathrooms. A wooden trunk on the side of the bed holds lanterns, while wooden stools and a small ladder create a minimalist setup around the central stove.

Activities on the camp are exploratory, including a hike in the morning to a nearby “island” covered with giant cactus offering views on the Salar. In the afternoon, travelers can head to the village of Coquesa and its mummies sheltered in a cave 600 meters above the village. Fit travelers can opt to hike to the lower lip of Tunupa volcano.

La Paz’s Gustu Restaurant, which runs the camp’s culinary offerings, provides gastronomic adventurers the chance to delve into Bolivian food and biodiversity by offering native products of the region. It also promotes a good cause, as it is the first project of the Melting Pot Bolivia Foundation, which drives gastronomic projects that benefit people from vulnerable backgrounds. The mission is to provide them with opportunities to improve their life conditions.
