In November 1991 Chris Dewhirst piloted the first hot air balloon over Mount Everest. National Geographic’s film of the expedition, “Ballooning Over Everest,” screened prime time in the US, Europe, and Australia. Chris’s awards include the prestigious Montgolfier Diploma from the Federation Aeronautique Internationale, the Oswald Watt Gold Medal, Australia’s highest civil aviation honor, the UK’s Salaman Trophy and the Order of Australia – a Federal Government award for his contribution to Adventure Tourism. Chris holds two world records, is the chief pilot for Picture This Ballooning, and an authorised test officer for the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority. He lives in Byron Bay, Australia.
